A 10-minute Black Friday check for your Shopify store.

Ten things a founder can check alone, each in about ten seconds. Tick what your store already does and see what is left.

Stores tend to freeze changes around 20 November (agency guidance), so the window to fix things is mid-October to mid-November. If you want an offer page built, aim to have it done by 13 November.

  1. Check in 10 seconds. Open a product page on your phone. Is there a delivery price or a free-delivery line near the buy button, without scrolling to the footer?

Why it matters. Extra costs at checkout are the top reason shoppers abandon, 39% on one Baymard list (no year or sample size given). Baymard also recommends showing free-delivery status early. Source: Baymard, reduce cart abandonment.

  2. Check in 10 seconds. Search your store name on Google, then compare the search snippet, the announcement bar and the delivery policy. Do the threshold and the price match?

Why it matters. We have seen a store say one threshold in Google and another on the site. We found no solid study with a number for this, so we don't quote one. A mismatch is a trust problem you can fix in an afternoon. Source: none worth quoting.

  3. Check in 10 seconds. Add something to the basket in a private window and start checkout. Can you pay without making an account?

Why it matters. Forced account creation is the reason 19% of shoppers gave for abandoning a checkout (Baymard's list, same page as above). Source: Baymard, reduce cart abandonment.

  4. Check in 10 seconds. Add to basket and look for Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal buttons on the product page or in the basket.

Why it matters. In Shopify's own 2025 Black Friday weekend figures, 32% of orders used Shop Pay. Shopify's claim that it converts better than guest checkout comes from an unnamed study, so treat it as a vendor claim. Source: Shopify, Black Friday weekend 2025.

  5. Check in 10 seconds. Start a checkout with a spare email address, then leave. Does an email arrive within a day? It takes about two minutes.

Why it matters. Klaviyo's 2024 benchmark report (2023 data) found the average abandoned-cart flow earned $3.65 per recipient. Check the exact click path in your Shopify admin first, as menus move. Source: Klaviyo, abandoned cart benchmarks.

  6. Check in 10 seconds. Open your top three products. Are there stars or a review count near the title? Check on a phone, as review apps load late.

Why it matters. Shoppers look for reviews, more so on pricier items. The best-known study (Northwestern's Spiegel Research Center, 2017) is old and we only saw it second-hand, so we don't quote its headline number. Source: Lipscore summary of the Spiegel study.

  7. Check in 10 seconds. On a product page, find the returns promise without opening the footer. Can you say it in one sentence?

Why it matters. Baymard found 19% of users abandoned a checkout in the last 3 months because they did not trust the site with their card details (1,026 respondents). Returns and contact details near the button are part of that trust. Source: Baymard, perceived security of payment form.

  8. Check in 10 seconds. Open your homepage on mobile data, not wifi. Count to three. Look for giant images or a pop-up that loads late. Skip the speed score, as it swings 5 to 10 points between runs.

Why it matters. Deloitte Digital for Google (37 brands, about 30 million sessions) linked a 0.1 second mobile speed gain to 8.4% more retail conversions. It is a correlation, and Google paid for it. Source: web.dev, Milliseconds Make Millions.

  9. Check in 10 seconds. Put a code in the basket on top of an automatic discount or sale price. Is the final total what you meant to charge, and does it match your banner?

Why it matters. We found no solid study with a number, so we don't quote one. The tells are a code that stacks wrongly, a sale price with no was-price, and a banner offer that differs from checkout. Source: none worth quoting.

  10. Check in 10 seconds. Check your sold-out hero products, last year's sale collections, and any cut-off date for Christmas delivery.

Why it matters. Shopify merchants sold $14.6 billion over the 2025 Black Friday weekend, peaking at $5.1 million a minute, with the UK among the top selling countries. Empty sale pages and sold-out heroes waste that traffic. Source: Shopify, Black Friday weekend 2025.
